WRECKLESS So How Did The Cruz Missiles Start? I hear you were the only member at first Skot?
SKOT I used to play upright bass in a psychobilly band from Santa Rosa about three years ago. We talked about moving down to Santa Cruz and changing our name, and The Cruz Missiles was one of the names I came up with. I ended up being the only person who moved. I tried starting up a new band, but I just couldn't find people to play with. I started feeling sorry for myself, because I missed being in a band, and I didn't want to stop playing music. I finally found a job picking up roadkill and dirty needles around a warehouse on the westside of Santa Cruz, and when I saved up enough money for a microphone and some recording equipment, The Cruz Missiles were born. The first song I recorded was Bloodlust. I was drinking alone in my apartment one night, grinding my teeth and being pissed off about my state of affairs, when I finally just said "Fuck it, I'll do it on my own". I wrote the song in fifteen minutes, put it online and I haven't stopped since.
WRECKLESS So who's in the band now and what do they play?
SKOT That's a tough question. It's still just me at the moment. I've found a really killer group of guys to play with, but everybody lives so far away from eachother it's almost impossible to get together to work. The first two people I approached about being Cruz Missiles were Darren and Kevin. They are my drinking buddies from back home, and we've all been in a couple of bands together. I was recording songs with a drum machine, and I'm not very good at programming it, so I was looking for a good drummer to work on some of the songs. I wanted Kevin on drums and Darren on guitar, but Kevin moved to LA for awhile so I had to make some changes. Darren is playing drums now, until Kevin moves back to the Bay Area in July. I met Jake and Corey when I went to see my friend's band Misled Citizen open for Rancid in San Diego. Jake and Corey are both in MxCx, so they helped get me into the show, and we kicked it backstage for a bit. We didn't talk about music for a couple of weeks, until Corey said he liked some of the Cruz Missiles songs I had recorded, and he said he was down to play guitar. I got a ride up to Daly City where he lives with Jake, and we worked on some of the material. I couldn't remember the lyrics, and I was having trouble playing bass and singing at the same time, so we bought some beer to jog my memory. Long story short, the night ended with police, and a new Cruz Missile was born. Corey came down to Santa Cruz a few weeks later, and he brought Jake to play bass because I was fucking it up. Jake is a real quick learner, so it was a no brainer that he should play bass.
